Description

The world's first 3-in-1 modular merino wool baby nest — one natural-fibre pod, from newborn to toddler. Handcrafted in Cape Town

Will it keep my baby comfortable?
The contoured shape gives the close, held feeling of the womb, which helps settle the startle reflex and calm a restless baby. Merino regulates temperature — warm in winter, cool in summer — so your baby isn't too hot or too cold. Soft cotton knit and neutral tones keep things calm rather than overstimulating, and the wool gently carries familiar scent, the cue a newborn looks for when settling.

Is it safe for sleep?
It's designed around the things safe-sleep guidance asks parents to manage. For 0–4 months, the tied newborn cover forms a soft hammock shape that supports back (supine) sleep and gently deters rolling. From 4 months, once your baby can roll with control, you switch to the 4m+ cover. The merino and cotton are fully breathable, the base is medium-firm rather than soft and sinking, and there are no loose synthetic fillings. The pod is made for supervised rest and closeness — it doesn't replace safe-sleep basics, so always supervise your baby and let common sense prevail.

If you'd rather your baby didn't sleep in the nest shape overnight, you have a simple option: take the border out and use the nest cover as a slipcover over the flat merino mattress. Your baby then sleeps on a firm, flat surface — with the same breathable merino and cotton — and you can bring the border and nest shape back for supervised daytime rest and closeness.

How long will we use it?
Years, not months. It starts as an enclosed newborn nest, opens into a roomier U-shape from 4 months, then the parts carry on. The border slides under a cot's fitted sheet to soften the edge during the cot transition, and later becomes a cot bumper or tummy-time support. The base/ moses mattress becomes your toddler pillow to be used with a standard size pillowcase. One considered purchase, used across every early stage.

Is it easy to care for?
Yes. The wool parts are machine washable on a gentle wool cycle (wool detergent, cold water, lowest spin). Don't tumble dry — air out regularly and rotate the cushion weekly for even wear. A KO-COON Merino Puddle Pad is worth adding to protect the base and keep airflow good. Keeping a spare nest cover means one's always on while the other's in the wash.

Will it suit my nursery?
It's made to look calm in a real home. Cover colours: Milky White, Grey Marl, Navy, Fudge, Sky Blue, Blossom Pink, Matcha Green, Mocha Brown and Black (made to order). Swapping covers is a simple way to refresh the look without buying a whole new pod.

What's it made of?
Merino wool and soft cotton knit throughout — natural fibre, fully breathable, and naturally resistant to dust mites, mold, mildew and bacteria, which suits sensitive skin. Wool is also naturally flame-resistant, so there's no chemical flame retardant against your baby's skin. Designed with input from paediatric physiotherapists and occupational therapists for even, medium-firm support of the developing spine, neck and head.

Did you know?
Newborns spend around half their sleep in active (REM) sleep — light movement, twitching and brain development all happen here. A breathable, secure and familiar space helps babies move between sleep cycles and settle more easily. That's the thinking behind the pod — read more in our journal: Why the KO-COON Merino Nesting Pod 3-in-1 is a thoughtfully designed sleep solution for newborns.
